UNDATED (KDAL) – With the weather warming up and people spending more time outside, the Minnesota and Wisconsin Departments of Natural Resources encourage the public to be “bear aware” and take steps to avoid potential conflicts with black bears this spring.
As the bears emerge from their dens this time of year, they are hungry and often explore more territories in search of food.
Although they are normally solitary forest animals, their powerful sense of smell can lead them into more urban areas for an easy meal especially in the spring and fall.
The DNR says there are steps you can take to help reduce possible visits by bears to your neighborhood. That includes removing bird feeders, reduce food odors and keep outdoor garbage containers tightly sealed, don’t leave pet food outside and limit the amount of time pets are out and unattended.
Never feed a bear, intentionally or not. Bears will return often to a source of food which could result in possible conflicts with people.
Bears tend to avoid interacting with people and can be scared away if it has a clear escape route. Never corner a bear and don’t turn your back and attempt to run away.
More information on avoiding unexpected interactions with black bears can be found at the Minnesota or Wisconsin DNR bear management web pages:
